SNU Plans Stem Cell Center for Incurable Diseases

Seoul National University Hospital will set up a center to develop treatments for incurable diseases based on stem cell research by Prof. Hwang Woo-suk and others around the world.
SNU Hospital will also build a global stem cell bank in October, Prof. Ahn Cu-rie, a member of Hwang's research team, said Friday.

The center would seek to develop treatments for conditions like spinal cord damage and diabetes by replacing sick or damaged cells with new cells grown from stem cells. For example, damaged spinal cords could be treated by transplanting nerve cells into damaged areas, while juvenile diabetes could be treated by transplanting insulin-secreting cells. ¡°At the center, we will decide for which diseases making stem cells would be most effective, and prepare for clinical testing."

Research would be carried out in consultation with the international research teams who will participate in the global stem cell bank. The world's most prominent biological research institutes like Harvard University, University of Wisconsin and New York Blood Center's National Cord Blood Program and the Cambridge University have decided to join.
